About this skill

Distress can become the focus of a security interaction. This short topic gives a team a starting point for discussing how an officer responds to the person in front of them.

Watch with a specific question in mind: what would help you understand what support the person needs? Afterwards, discuss the words you would use and where you would find the relevant support arrangements for your workplace.

What to focus on

  • Consider how you would begin a conversation with someone in distress.
  • Identify questions to raise about the support available at your venue.
  • Discuss how you would pass a concern to the appropriate colleague.

When this is useful
